Alltel’s Problem

This post is also serving as a test to wordpress 2.1. I upgraded a few days ago but haven’t had a chance to utilize it yet. Not really much different. IMO – wait for 3.0

The world of wireless providers is a dark and sinister place. Hidden fees. Overages. Dropped Calls. 2 year contracts. Automatically renewing contracts when making a plan change. Hideously stupid assholes who call themselves ‘tech support’ or “customer support”. It’s got to be a tough market to get into, much less be a successful provider.

Alltel almost has it pegged. Their customer service has always been very good. Plan options are extremely affordable. For example, i added a data internet plan for my phone and it’s only $5 a month. I don’t get charged out the ass for text or picture messages. I make changes to my plan and my contract is NOT automatically renewed for an additional two years. When i “Roam”, i don’t pay any money extra for that. I can call 10 of the people closest to me from any network without even being charged.

For the most part – one must admit… Alltel has their shit together.

Then we come to it… the single most frustrating piece of this entire wireless pizza. Alltel has about as many phones to pick from as any local “big lots”. I mean seriously. It’s almost driven me to switch carriers and deal with all the bullshit from paragraph 1. They do not have any ‘cool’ or ‘innovative’ devices available. No Blackjacks. No iPhones (not that i’d want one). Their collection is stale. It’s literally horrendous. How about the cool new UTStarcom 6700 ? Hmm… sprint had that like 3 years ago and stopped selling it last year. Way to be on the ball…!

Wait… seriously the Motorola Q is coming out in March!! Hmm… apparently Verizon hasn’t had that for almost a year. GG Alltel. Just now they finally got the Razr V3m with an expandable memory card, which can be purchased in flaming gay red or Bright silver. hmm. Meh. heh. etc.

Then they take their lack of a phone selection, and they further cripple it. Alltel’s phones are all “Brew” based. Apparently this means that it is impossible to download, use, run, or even think about seeing any sort of java application on them. Can’t use Google’s new gmail app… Can’t use google maps. Can’t download java games that are steadily gaining popularity. My phone’s browser can’t even save bookmarks. Think about that. My phone can watch a full feature film (The Boondock Saints is on there, as well as all three of Vanbergs’ Heroics videos), but it can’t even save a bookmark.

Alltel, What the hell are you thinking. If you could get your shit together with phone selection and functionality, you’d be the #1 Cellular provider in this country by far. Get some new phones with the JVM, and until that time… enjoy being #5.

Respect the Link

I consider being ‘linked’ in somebody else’s blog or website a sign of respect. Linking somebody is an acknowledgment that another is worthy of your recommendation. If you link somebody, you ‘vouch’ for them in a sense. It’s a kind gesture, worthy of honor. But, it is not unconditional. If I show somebody respect, I would expect to be held in the same regard and have the same respect shown to me. If not, i can only assume we are nemesis.

Given that. A few links have been removed from my site:
glaven.org
squarehalo.org
Vanbergs.wordpress.com will have a grace period due to site overhaul.

I encourage all to review their links. Carefully consider who is / is not linked on your website. It shows constitution, and should not be taken lightly!

Sheer Holidays

I’ve had a couple of days off this week, just to burn up the rest of my vacation time before the year’s end – and it’s been nice. Yesterday i loafed around and watched a few movies. “Jurassic Park” (hadnt seen it in awhile and i own it.), “Dirty” with Cuba gooding Jr., and “Covert One: The Hades Factor” with Stephen Dorff and Mira Sovino. Overall, all three movies were pretty good, even considering the “Jack Bauer wannabe-ness” of Stephen Dorff.

Today I did all of my Christmas shopping. And it wasn’t even hard. GG Best Buy, EB Games, and Eddie Bauer.I’m really looking forward to Christmas… There’s really nothing like a Christmas spent in the Kingdom of Vanhood. I’m not sure when this’ll change for me… but The kingdom of Vanhood really still feels like home to me. When I stay there for a weekend or holiday, its always hard to leave… I love Hart Michigan. 🙁

Now a bulleted list of ‘things’:

  • Added some Ubuntu/Beryl Screenies. Its much cooler with transparency
  • Rockbox is still running my ipod.
  • Rocky 6 really is coming out.
  • Guitar Hero II on expert is not possible.
  • I hate comment spam. (on wordpress and Gallery2)
  • Google provides a customized IE7 now… that rocks.

“Real” Detroit Lions Update

The Real Detroit Lions have just completed their regular season play.  As such, here is a brief overview of stats and highlights for the team and some standout players.

  • Steve Vanbergs – Wide Receiver:  NFL MVP, Offensive Rookie of the Year, Pro Bowl Selection.  3,080 yards on 126 catches, 36 touchdowns, 24.4 avg yards per catch, longest reception 86 yards.

Uncontrollable Laughter

So apparently google translator is undeniably the most entertaining thing to ever exist… Surely, Google did not intend it to be entertaining… I’m sure that google designed this tool to help people explore new languages, diversify their culture, and overall do good things in the world.

However, if you tweak the usage of this utility – the outcome is possibly the funniest thing of all time. Instead of using it to really translate language… use as follows:

  1. Go to google translator
  2. Paste in some typical english (1-2 paragraphs is a good amount)
  3. Translate that into japanese
  4. Copy all japanese output
  5. paste the japanese text BACK into google translator
  6. Translate that from japanese back into english
  7. Laugh uncontrollably

For example, take this paragraph from my previous post…
Ryan Payner and Wes Vanlandw command the defense with mortal peril. Payner provides a strong line presence while Vanlandw continually shuns receivers in sheer dutch coverage.Eric Flo kicks the ball once in awhile.

Now Translated to Japanese and Back to English:
[raian] Payner and Wes Vanlandw escaping order death to the defense of danger. Payner while avoiding the receiver of the Dutch coverage whose Vanlandw always is thin, offers strong line existence. Eric Flo one time kicks sphere for a while.

I’ve seriously done this for hours… I really don’t know if i’ve ever laughed so hard. A couple notable translations that i’ve seen… Waffle house = “The house of the many waffle supplies“. Big Lots = “The lot, which at first glance, is large“.

Here’s a paragraph from Vanbergs’ website… just because it is hilarious.
Real Paragraph:
“Other than that, the past month has been pretty uneventful, hence the supreme lack of boring updates. It will be incredibly nice to get the hell out of this state for a week, even if it does entail riding in a car with Flo for eight billion hours. I think the stops at multiple Waffle Houses will more than make up for the company ;-)

Translated/Retranslated:
“Past other than that month directly boring renewal considerably calmness safety, therefore is the highest scarcity. That accompanying the fact that it rides by the car where 8,000,000,000 hours Flo have been attached it is very splendid to come out of this state of 1 weeks. I think of that the company where stop of the house of the many waffle supplies from many decides; -)”

Try it with anything… i’ll post comments if/when i find some more funny ones…

The “Real” Detroit Lions

I would like to introduce to everyone the real Detroit Lions Football team. As the “fake” lions are the most abysmal sporting organization to ever grace professional athletics, the real Lions are surely welcomed by all and held in very high regard among all facets of competitive sports.

Introducing The “Real” Sega NFL 2k5 Detroit Lions, straight from my Xbox:

  • Eric Vanberge, #24, Running Back
  • Steven Vanbergs, #10, Wide Receiver, special teams kick return
  • Wesley Vanlandw, #25, Defensive Back, special teams kick/punt return
  • Ryan Payner, #50, Middle Linebacker
  • Eric Flo, #0, Kicker
  • Mr. Mickeyvb, #1, Quarterback
  • Joey Harrington, #3, moved to Field goal/extra point snap holder
  • Remaining roster standard Detroit as of 2005 season

The real Detroit Lions have just completed game 10 of their season with a stunning 68 to 21 victory over the Indianapolis Colts. Highlights include:

  • Steven Vanbergs: 330 receiving yards, 7 Touchdowns
  • Mr. Mickeyvb: 429 yards passing, 8 Touchdown passes
  • Eric Vanberge: 159 yards rushing, 2 Touchdowns
  • Wesley Vanlandw: 2 Interceptions

As we head to week 11 vs. the Arizona Cardinals, here are some of the Season Stats:

  • Eric Vanberge: 227 Carries, 1477 yards, 6.5 ypc, 17 touchdowns, 86 yard longest run, 0 fumbles
  • Steven Vanbergs: 78 Receptions, 1950 yards, 25 ypc, 76 longest rec., 26 Touchdowns
  • Mr. Mickeyvb: 148/274 passes (54%), 3,143 yards passing, 11.5 yds per pass, 36 TD, 24 interceptions, 80 yard longest throw
  • Wes Vanlandw: 20 Tackles, 1.5 sacks, 18 deflected passes, 7 interceptions, 262 yards, 4 Touchdowns. 547 kick return yards, 1 TD. 246 punt return yards, 2 TD.
  • Ryan Payner: 30 Tackles, 3 sacks, 3 forced fumbles
  • Eric Flo: 4 Field goals made, 6 attempts. 55 yard longest.
  • Overall Team: 10-0 Record, 4,642 yards total offense, 469 Total Points.

The Lions are the only undefeated team in the NFL, and the only team to have clinched a playoff birth thus far… The strong quarterback skills of Mr. Mickeyvb hold the teams offense together, and combined with powerful running back/wide receiver brothers McManus – the result is the #1 offense in the NFL.

Ryan Payner and Wes Vanlandw command the defense with mortal peril. Payner provides a strong line presence while Vanlandw continually shuns receivers in sheer dutch coverage.
