An addition, and search strings.

No real substance for this update…

Just FYI, I have added a new gallery comprised of ‘wallpapers’ that I have created. Some I made with bryce3d back in the day, and others are real pictures i took (but then “GIMP’ed”). Either way, they are all cheezy. But, maybe i’ll try to do more / better ones for everyone to enjoy

Briefs:

Went to Indiana to see a Dave Matthews concert, slight upkeep on site design, saw the hardest rain ever, saw batman begins (on imax), own way too many dress clothes, feel very adult as of late, happy fathers day to mickeyvb, etc etc.

Detailed:
Of course it has been some time since I have updated. This really is the norm. Moving on…

Although I’m really no fan whatsoever of the Dave Matthews band, I went to a concert in Noblesville Indiana. I had bought the tickets as a birthday present for my novia (they are like her favorite band), so pretty much I had to go. I forced myself to go with an open mind, and was pleasantly surprised. I’m not going to go out and buy all the CD’s or anything, but the concert really was quite an experience. There is a complete diversity among the fans of that band that I have never seen before. People from all walks of life drove all kinds of miles just to see this band. Old couples, frat boys, hippies, middle aged men with their buddies, teenie boppers, biker dudes…

These people have such a love for this band that they were willing to sit in record setting rainfall (i’ve heard it was 3 inches in 1 hour) to see the band. The concert took place at the Verizon Wireless Music center, which has probably 5,000 seats covered by pavillion roof (where I was, but STILL got wet), so there are about 15,200 people on the lawn, just absorbing mother nature at her worst. This storm was ubelievable… It was the remnance of tropical storm “arlene” and it was wind and rain like I really don’t think i have ever seen…

But I have to say that I’m actually glad it happened that way… The wierd weather situation added a certain energy to the whole concert. Peoples attitude’s changed, the bands play changed. Everybody got into it a little bit more… This post is getting long, so to make a long story short, the Dave Matthews band really gets into their music… The concert goer can’t help but do the same.

as a P.S. – I’ve lately been trying to think about my life from an outside
perspective. Where is it at? Where is it going? Where do I want it to be?
Where do I want it to go? Should I change something? Should I add something?
Like I said though, I’ve been trying to do that… I’ll have to see if
it really happens.

Narrow it down…

Obviously i am a “computer guy”. Being said computer guy, I find myself interested in a wide variety of things of/pertaining to computers.

I like digital photography, digial photography editing, video, video editing, audio, media in general, ripping, encoding, gaming, breaking things, fixing things, linux, windows, macintosh, web mastering, servers, programming, scripting, bash, databases, cmd, etc. etc. etc.

Here’s where I’m going with this… I know how to do alot of different things. BUT, my skill or ability varies greatly. For example: digital imaging, programming, and web design put me in “amateur” at best. On the other side, I’m pretty good at linux in general, and server admin. I feel like I try to do too much. Getting into so many different aspects of “I.T.” and technical related ventures has left me feeling like I have missed something. I could have focused all my time and efforts into fewer things, learned them well. Learned everything about them. Become an expert.

At this moment… I’m feeling like a jack of all trades, master of none. “Jack” being a loose term that can also mean “complete noob”.

P4P Banner Contest.

I don’t know if this will have any takers or not… But, I’d like to initiate an official “P4P” banner contest.

I grow ever sick and tired of my banners. And I’m definitely not enough of a graphic artist to make one that I respect. So, what I’d be looking for is a new page banner, with any theme, any colors, and preferrably 750 x 150 px.

I think what i’d like to do is have people email them to me… vanberge@gmail.com. When I have some (I may put one in myself) I’d like to have a msg board poll of my friends / page goers so they may vote which one would be the winner.

Basically, I am asking for a page banner without exactly “asking for a page banner”. Let “the game” begin

Microsoft thumbs down.

I’d like to take some time and dedicate this post to some alternative software that is available for your computer. All of the following software is free of charge..

Firefox
Firefox is a fairly well known alternative web browser… This browser is really gaining in popularity, as it recently passed 50 million downloads. The guys at mozilla dot org really do a nice job. The Firefox web browser is simply awesome. When it first came out, I was against it. Much like I was against netscape, and the original mozilla. But now, I am fully converted forever. Tabbed browsing, additional security, popup blocking, etc. There are tons of extensions that make this program even better… FoxyTunes for example will allow control of almost any media player via your firefox browser. Calander, FlashGot, FireFTP, it really is an admirable software suite. I hope the guys that work on this get what they deserve; And to help with that, I’m almost surely going to order a Firefox polo shirt to wear to work on “casual Friday”

ThunderBird
Thunderbird is the email client that compliments Firefox. It functions very similar to Outlook or Outlook express… But it goes far above and beyond in terms of security, and features. Most notable is the RSS subscription capability to make Blog or news browsing much more efficient. Again, there are many addons and extensions that can be very easily installed to customize this email client.

So let’s review… These softwares are free, they are more secure against spam, popups, “malware” in general, and they are very simple to install and use. If you’re like me, it’s fun to use something different. I completely deleted outlook express… I add/removed it in windows components, and then deleted all instances of “msimn.exe”. I’m going to take some screenshots of these programs with various extensions and themes… I’ll put them into a gallery.

Finally, I’m going to download and install Sun’s latest version of OpenOffice. Which, according to the AP, is going to be the killer of microsoft’s office suite. I’ll update this same post later with comments….
